WHAT PLANTS ATTRACT HUMMINGBIRDS TO YOUR GARDEN?

Red flowers are the best way to attract hummingbirds to your garden.  But what kind of flowers are the easiest flowers to keep around, and how do you treat them?

I was amazed when I moved to Texas and saw a hummingbird for the first time. Hummingbirds are native to the Americas and therefore exciting news for people from Europe. Even now six years later I immensely enjoy to eat my breakfast and watch the hummingbirds zoom past the windows from flower to flower.

I threw out my hummingbird feeder last year because there was a lot of wasps and bees on it. (It was something very wrong with the design). It seemed that they scared away the hummingbirds, so they were left with the flowers in my garden. This is the flowers the hummingbirds love in my garden:

  • Fire Spikes Plant Odontonema strictum
  • Ruby-throated Hummingbird on Canna
  • Jatropha
  • Ixora
  • Firebush Hamelia
  • Hibiscus

I will underline that a lot of these wonderful and easy shrubs and bushes I recommend here can freeze back even here in Houston, but all of them has been easy to grow back from the ground. You can cover up the most precious ones if a cold spell is coming. It’s also a good idea to mulch around their roots to protect both against heat and cold.
